From Sketch to Sanctuary: Building My Garden Workshop – Summer / Autumn 2025
What began as a simple sketch has grown into something far more substantial — my very own garden workshop. It’s been a rewarding journey from concept to construction, and I thought I’d share a few highlights for anyone curious about the process or considering a similar project.
After finalizing the design, I submitted a planning application and got the green light to proceed. The groundwork came first: excavation, drainage, and an insulated concrete slab to provide a solid, thermally efficient base. From there, the timber frame went up, wrapped in Tyvek for breathability and weather protection.
I opted for a warm roof design to improve insulation and reduce thermal bridging — a choice that should pay off during colder months. UPVC windows are now fitted, bringing in natural light while keeping the space secure and energy-efficient.
There’s still a bit to do — cladding, internal finishes, and some landscaping to integrate the structure into the garden — but it’s already starting to feel like a proper workspace. Whether it’s for electronics, DIY, or just a quiet spot to think, this little building is shaping up to be a game-changer.

2026 Update – The outside is now done-done
It’s taken me about six months to get the exterior fully finished, and what a journey it’s been. Every stage taught me something new — from fitting the cladding to tackling the finer details that bring everything together.
I’m really pleased with how it’s turned out; the workshop now feels like a natural extension of the garden rather than just an add-on.
With the outside wrapped up, my focus can shift indoors.
There’s insulation, wiring, and plenty of finishing touches ahead, but I’m hoping to have the interior ready to go by around Easter — just in time to start making proper use of the space.
